Frequent nuclear missile tests, a lineage of dictators that withhold the freedoms of their people, exporting of ballistic missiles, unchecked radicalism: this is the basis of the American view of North Korea which has inspired much of the United States policy on engagement with them.

Engagement with North Korea started in the Reagan era with his “modest initiative” that allowed North Korean officials to visit the States. Today engagement has taken a turn, with the recent policy decree of the Trump administration on Sep. 21st to place economic sanctions on North Korea.

There have been a multitude of different attempts at engagement with North Korea in the past, some with a focus on containment and others on appeasement. The many options on how to deal with the rouge state have people torn on the basis of moral fiber and fear of Kim Jong Un’s capabilities.

A question on the lips of many is whether or not the sanctions will be effective. The act of placing sanctions was a call to arms of the international community to band with the United States in limiting North Korea’s nuclear program through their economy.

This puts a reliance on unpredictable countries like China and Russia to take the same steps. While China and Russia have made statements claiming they would do so only their actions can tell.

Wth Russia and China, two of the biggest countries that engage with North Korea on an economiclevel, saying they will curtail their engagement the outcome of the sanctions look positive. No matter what, engagement with countries like North Korea on a diplomatic level is important to preventing unnecessary war.
