The music service Tidal, launched last year, may be harming artists rather than helping them as was evident with Kanye West’s new release “The Life of Pablo.” Jay Z bought the platform that is supposed to be second to none in sound quality because of “lossless streaming,” meaning the sound you stream is the same quality sound you would hear if you owned the CD.

Fifteen big name celebrities including Jay Z, Beyonce, West, Madonna, Rihanna, J Cole, and Jason Aldean all have stakes in the company. The service is reported to have 2.5 million subscribers after the launch of West’s new album, but those numbers are not close to competing with other services like Spotify with 20 million paying subscribers and Apple Music with 11 million subscribers.

This lackluster showing could have been from the initial price of $20 per month.

Freshman Hunter Hoataling said, “I would not pay $20 for Tidal or to listen to Kanye’s new album.”

The company later lowered its prices to $10 per month, but this was still too high for junior Chloe Mize who commented, “For an artist of Kanye’s stature I would pay around $3.99.”

West, an artist with multiple Grammy awards, has yet to see the Billboard 200 with his new album that has been out for over a week. And according to Rolling Stone, which gave the album 4.5/5 stars, it is not for lack of quality.

Hoataling continued stating, “I think these services can get a little ridiculous. I understand the artists are trying to make a profit, but I think they need to look at ease of access and affordability for their fans sake or they look to lose a lot more than a few streams.”
